Description of Webinar:

All behaviour is communication, but what is a child trying to tell us when they are disruptive, hostile, resistant, or hesitant? More importantly, what do these behaviours evoke in caregivers? This workshop will use an attachment lens to understand the motivation, and even the functionality of these behaviours, but focus more on what we, as caregivers, can do to take care of the unresolved emotions that precipitate such behaviours. We will look at redefining trauma to include the absence of the everyday necessary good, and how it affects the brain. We will look at an attachment based model, the Circle of Security, as a guide for decoding what is going on in that moment for the children, for us, and what we can do to create a shift for the child. Hint: It’s all about the relationship!

Bio of Facilitator:

Joanne Brown has been a clinical social worker for nearly 35 years, working with families who struggle to be the best parents they can be. She works at New Directions as a Clinician in the Family Therapy Services, where she has had the opportunity to work with child care centre staff across Winnipeg. Joanne has also been the Team Lead for the ELCC project to bring Circle of Security to child care, as a mentor of those who facilitate the model. She had trained in many modalities in attachment and co-chairs the Attachment Network of Manitoba (www.attachmentnetwork.ca).
