Orange Shirt Day

September 30

Orange Shirt Day – September 30th

Today, on Orange Shirt Day, we honor and remember the children who never returned home from residential schools, the survivors, their families, and their communities. This day is a solemn reminder of the injustices Indigenous peoples have endured and continue to face as a result of Canada’s residential school system.

We wear orange to acknowledge that Every Child Matters—a message that speaks to the truth, the pain, and the resilience of Indigenous peoples. The orange shirt symbolizes the loss of identity, culture, and dignity experienced by so many, and stands as a call to listen, learn, and take meaningful action toward reconciliation.

Let this day not only be one of remembrance, but also of commitment—to educate ourselves, to reflect on the ongoing impact of colonialism, and to stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities. Reconciliation is not a single act, but a continuous journey we must walk together with respect, compassion, and accountability.

Reflecting on the truths of Residential schools and recognizing the strength and resilience of survivors, their families and communities,  please the share educational resources from the Ontario Aboriginal Head Start Association (OAHSA).

Every Child Matters—yesterday, today, and always.
